Our judge this year, Joyce L. Youngberg, not only selected the winners, but provided an informed commentary to explain her choices. This input is invaluable to artists, and in keeping with this, during the opening on March 3, the exhibiting artists all spoke about their artwork, its methods and its influences. This gave us all some insights into how different people approach a subject.

Thank you Joyce, for taking the time to work with the Artists' Guild of Shrewsbury. Winners are listed below, with brief excerpts from Joyce's comments. Works remain on view until March 24.



First Place:

"Summer Street Garage" - watercolor by Joseph Rice

"There is brilliant light portrayed by the unpainted areas surrounding the shadows of this scene of everyday life."

Second Place:

"The Lobster Pot" - watercolor by Deb Schradeieck

"This painter has given this seaside street scene value to all who view it."

Third Place

"Edge of the World" - photograph by Joseph Allen

"The composition with vast shapes, textures and color is outstanding".

"Beach Grass" - Oil on canvas by Nancy Allen

"Even with simplicity a viewer can relate to this artist's strong visual image."

"Connor" - Watercolor by June Melden

"This profile portrait of a young pondering boy is a contrast in detail and simple sculptural quality."

"Beanstalk" - Stained glass by Joan DeSantis

"This is a delightful and well thought out small composition with wonderful finish work quality."
